Concepts

The learning content of this software is concept-based. The concepts form the foundation stones for the lessons. They form the core ideas that the children will gain and grow an understanding of. The on-screen, animated activities provide a motivation to explore these concepts, to discuss them in the virtual computer world together. To gain a richer and deeper understanding, the children then have hands-on environmental and social learning experiences.

Mathematics

  • Volume is the measure of space taken up by a three-dimensional object.
  • Capacity is the space within a container. The space inside is volume too, so the terms volume and capacity are interchangeable.
  • Geometry looks at lines, shapes and solids, their properties in space and their relationship to each other.
  • Hands-on experiences and conversation provide a solid platform for performing abstract mathematical concepts.

Music

  • Soundscape is a sequence of sounds shaped to enhance action or mood in a story.
  • Graphic notation is sound or music represented by shapes and lines.
  • Graphic score is a chart in which sound or music is represented by drawn shapes or lines.
  • Music elements are the key ingredients of music (eg, beat, rhythm, pitch, tempo, tone, colour, timbre, or dynamics).

Visual Art

  • Texture is the representation of structure and detail.
  • Collage is an abstract form of artwork in which materials like paper, leaves or string are glued to a surface.
  • Composition is the organisation of art elements (eg, shape, colour, texture) in an art work.

Social Studies

  • Social studies is the study of how people participate in society and how society operates. Through social inquiry children understand people’s role within society.
  • Process drama is a form of drama in which the purpose is to participate in learning, inquiry or discovery rather than presenting the drama to an audience.
  • Role play is using the imagination to identify with someone else in order to explore and represent experiences from their perspective or viewpoint.
  • Family roles recognise that people within families have different roles, rights and responsibilities as they participate in a group.
  • Family events look at occasions that families participate in together (eg, shopping trips, holidays and car journeys).
